Supplies Needed
Polymer Clay: Red, Yellow, Green, Blue, Beige, Black, White.
Seed bead eyes,
2-1/4" Glass Ornament ball
and Basic Tools

Jake the ClownA great way to use those leftover Christmas ornament balls, to display them year round. Joshua made "Jake the Clown" from Sculpey III Polymer clay. Directions are given for 2 oz. blocks of Scupley III which are divided into 4 "sticks".

First Print out BASIC INSTRUCTION page. Now proceed with instructions for making Jake. (Plastic ornament balls can be used instead of the glass balls if you reduce the baking temperature to 200 degrees. All children should have adult supervision for baking or using glass balls)

Shoes: Divide 1 stick of yellow in half and roll into balls. Flatten to 1/4" thickness and shape into long teardrop shapes as shown. Press together at heels. Body: Put an 1/8" dot of glue on each heel and gently press ornament ball onto shoes. Use needle tool to indent lines in shoes for soles.

Collar: Roll 1/2 stick of White into a 3-1/2" long rope. Flatten to 1/8" thick and shape into a circular collar and press onto the ornament at the neck. Use the end of the paint brush to indent shapes in collar.

Head: Roll 1/2 stick of Beige into a ball. Indent the ball slightly with the side of your thumb for the cheeks. Eyes: Press seed bead eyes in with the needle tool. Press the head onto the collar, over the neck of the ornament. Mouth: Flatten a 1/4" ball of white and shape into a mouth. Press on the face and indent with the needle tool. Nose: Roll a 1/4" ball of red for the nose and carefully press it on the face without flattening it. Add tiny black triangles and commas for eyebrows and face paint.

Hair: Roll narrow ropes of red for hair. Make loops and twist them into curls. Press them on the head, starting at the front with short ones, adding longer ones as you go to the back of the head.

Hat: Divide ½" stick of Blue in half and roll into balls. Flatten one into a circle for the hat brim and press onto the head. Use your finger or the end of the paint brush and hollow out center of other ball. Press on the top of the hat brim and blend edges. Indent the top with the paint brush. Add colored dots to the hat. If you want to hang the clown on a brass stand or use it as Christmas ornament, then twist the wire that came in the glass ball and press it into the top of the hat.

Package: Roll 1/4" stick of Green into a ball, then flatten to 1/4" thickness and shape into a rectangle. Press on to front of Clown. Bow: Make 2 triangles out of Red and press them onto package with pointed ends to the center. Press a Red ball into the center of triangles.

Hands: Divide a 1/4 stick of Beige in half and roll into balls. Flatten and shape them into teardrops. Cut fingers with a knife and round the edges with your fingers. Use the round end of a flat toothpick to indent the finger nails. Use the needle tool to indent finger lines for the knuckles. Press hands onto the body with the fingers over the edge of the package. Cuffs: Roll 1/8 stick of Yellow and 1/8 stick of Blue into balls, then flatten them and shape into large comma shapes. Press them on over the ends of the hands. Press small balls on the cuffs for buttons and fon the front of the clown. Indent holes with needle tool.

Bake at 250 degrees for 35-40 minutes. Let cool.

Be sure and tell your friends if you enjoyed working with polymer clay and have fun sculpting together!
