What were you doing by the age of 11? If you're Joshua
Burkhardt you would have your own business, your own website, you would have been
featured in four newspapers and two magazines, been on TV and the radio, as well as having
taught numerous workshops to men, women, and children from 4 to 70.
And if that wasn't enough, now Joshua has written a beautiful book to
help promote polymer clay to all people from the ages of 4 to 70!
Hangin' Around With Noah is a terrific book, be it a gift for the Holidays, or
because you are like me and have to have every Polymer Clay book published!
Joshua's designs of Noah and the animals are adorable, and the directions
are even better. He has directions for finishing the characters with long jute legs, or
just with feet. Every action is broken down to very basic steps, and then those steps
blend together to make a wonderful finished product. These are easy to follow, and you
will produce many characters that you can be proud of.
Joshua uses very basic tools and supplies, easily available, which makes this
book a great present. Just add a couple of packages of clay to this book and I believe you
can start anyone playing with Polymer Clay. Joshua has devised an ingenious way
of measuring clay so you can be sure you are using the right amount of clay, and he has
directions on how to make some simple tools to help with the projects.
I went through the book page by page, several dozen times, trying to find if there was
something important that wasn't included, because it's difficult to totally recommend a
book to "newbies" when some important technique or method is omitted. Well, kudos
to the authors Joshua and Cheryl Burkhardt because I couldn't find ANYTHING
missing!
Kids and parents should have a great time with this book, because besides being a book
on polymer clay direction, there are many little jokes, puzzles, and Bible verses
that go along nicely with the theme of Noah and his animals. Kids will have a lot of fun
with this!
I strongly
recommend this book to people interested in experimenting with polymer clay, as well
as to children, who should be able to follow most of the directions just by looking at the
step-by-step photos.
On a side note, I was 40 years old before I discovered polymer clay. I keep learning
and pushing myself, trying to make up for all the years I spent on other Arts and Crafts
mediums, while Joshua started when he was nine years old! I can't wait to see what
he'll be doing 10 or 20 years from now. I have a feeling Joshua is going to WOW
the polymer clay world!
